YUMA, Ariz. – The 28th annual Yuma County Teacher of the Year banquet was held at the civic center in Yuma on Tuesday evening. Many people gathered to recognize the hard work of teachers across Yuma. The teacher of the Year was announced at the end of the banquet and is Ana Amaya, a first grade teacher at McGraw Elementary School. She has been a teacher for 9 years, her school has described her as being a very engaging teacher that brings the best out of her students. According to officials at the banquet she will receive a trip to Hawaii.
Several teachers were recognized at the event from High school, middle school, intermediate, Primary and K-6 Special Area. There were over 130 nominees that the finalists had been selected from, therefor the process was very competitive. The nominees were required to do interviews, write essays and even record a ten minute video of them teaching. Each teacher was nominated by their school and the board took part in the selection process.
