YUMA, Ariz- The neighborhood school resource program along with the Yuma Police Department will be doing a Community Oriented Policing Project at Pecan Grove Elementary School.
YPD is going to start the cleaning process tomorrow morning over on the south side of Pecan Grove Elementary School to clean out all the debris and brush that is in the area. Their plan is to make it a safer place for the kids to come to and from when going to school.
Arturo Hernandez, Neighborhood School Resource Officer, with YPD says, “We’re doing a community oriented policing project. Where we’re cleaning up the south side of pecan grove elementary. My unit is assigned to all the schools in yuma and their neighborhoods and we want to make sure that the kids go to school safe in the mornings and that they walk home safe at night.”
About a week ago a person passed away near the school in a pile of brush. Which is what led the neighborhood school resource program to conduct this clean up.
Hernandez said, “It was apparently from what we know…natural causes. But there use to be a lot of trees and debris. Homeless people would just sleep in those areas throughout the night. So this project what we’re doing is we’re going to completely clean out the area of the school so when the kids get out of school they aren’t going to run into any problems.”
Hernandez says the clean up will take at least a couple hours. The Superintendent and Director of the school will be bringing ten employees from the district with heavy machinery to clean out the area.
