EL CENTRO, Calif. – Some Imperial Valley volunteers are speaking out against a recent crime involving a woman accused of stealing money from the fundraising account of a cancer victim.
Thirty-three-year- old Leah M. Puyot is in custody for allegedly taking $11,500 from a GoFundMe account created to help a child fight cancer.
The Imperial County Sheriff’s Office said Puyot, a Holtville resident, was allegedly the only one with access to the funds that were taken from the child’s account.
Volunteers like Rosa Cesena are outraged by the news. She said her volunteer work is vital and sacred to her, and believes betraying that kind of trust is unimaginable.
“It’s something terrible. Something horrible. We are here to help people. We are her for to help not to take advantage of them,” Rosa Cesena said.
Puyot is being charged with grand theft. Her bail was set at $5,000.
