MOBILE, Alab. – Say hello to the USNS Yuma! The former secretary of homeland security as well as the Mayor of Yuma were in Mobile, Alabama to christen the latest naval vessel built at Austal. Mayor Doug Nicholls joined Janet Napolitano for the ceremony held Saturday morning.
The vessel is part of a $1.6 billion contract with the U.S. Navy. The Navy says the type of ship takes about 18 months to build. Napolitano talked about the importance of being a part of event.
“I think the connection between security and Arizona I think that’s what the secretary of the Navy had in mind when he asked me to be a sponsor,” said Napolitano.
The USNS Yuma will be undergoing water tests and sea trials in the coming weeks and months.
