Son of homicide suspect found guilty of hindering prosecution

YUMA, Ariz. – A jury has found the son of a homicide suspect guilty on one count of hindering prosecution. The jury came down with the verdict in the Modesto Cortes trial Thursday around 4 p.m.

The charge stems from a shooting that happened at Lin’s Grand Buffet in Yuma April 2014. Police believe Modesto Cortes’ father, Modesto Cortes-Serrillo, killed another man at the restaurant.  Officers believe he then took off to Mexico.

Closing arguments wrapped up Thursday afternoon. During the trial prosecutors called both siblings, Daisy Cortes and Modesto Cortes, to testify.

Daisy Cortes is on probation after she admitted driving her dad to Mexico.

Sentencing for the son is scheduled for March 13 at 8:30 a.m.

Modesto Cortes-Serrillo is still at large.
