YUMA, Ariz. – If there was anytime the AWC volleyball team needed a spark, it would be right now.
The Lady Matadors have struggled thru Arizona Community College Athletic Conference play close to the halfway point of the season; going 1-6 in these games and losing the last five games in conference matches.
On top of that, the Lady Mats played their first home match in three weeks on Wednesday night. But, it would turn out to be a potential confidence builder; as they took on last place Mesa at the House.
The first set started off rocky and came close to a loss for AWC, as constant errors kept the it close and even allowed the Thunderbirds to come within a point of taking the set; before Keana Smalls started a rally that culminated with a Tamani Simmons kill shot to take the first frame. Simmons would finish the match with 10 kills and 9 digs on the night.
The first set momentum would carry through to the next two, and the Lady Mats would get a much needed three set win; 27-25, 25-14 & 25-22.
AWC will get a tougher home test Friday night as they take on Eastern Arizona. The match will begin at 7 pm.
