BRAWLEY, Calif. – Brawley police said a 90-year-old woman’s life was saved thanks to the quick actions of two officers. The woman was choking on a piece of food when officers arrived at the Brawley home last week.
Officials said when the officers arrived the woman was almost unconscious. Officers applied the Heimlich maneuver and were able to dislodge the obstruction in her throat.
Police said the woman’s granddaughter called 911 but didn’t know how to provide more help for her loved one.
“There’s a reason police officers receive first responder training to be able to administer immediately in critical situations where persons may be choking, may be bleeding, may need immediate medical assistance,” Brawley Police Department Commander Brett Houser said.
The woman was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.
