Neil Green sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison

EL CENTRO, Calif. – Thirty-three-year-old Neil Green was found guilty of murdering his 62-year-old father Melvyn Green on July 6, 2012, in the El Centro home they shared.

Imperial County Superior Court Judge Raymond A. Cota read the sentencing, “The defendant is hereby sentenced to state prison for the end determined sentence of 25 years to life.”

Court proceedings began with a statement from the victim’s daughter Aprel Remkus.

“Neil green took everything from my father. He took his peace, his future, and he took my father’s last breath,” Remkus said.

Remkus said the last time she saw her father alive was on father’s day, just 19 days before his death. She asked for the maximum sentence.

Neil’s mother, Sara Green, also had the opportunity to give a statement but was interrupted by Judge Cota when she tried to defend her son instead of saying something about the victim.

“There was an obstruction of justice here, and Neil should be released very, very soon,” Sara Green said. ]

Neil was the last one to give a statement.

“I’m sorry, Aprel and I love you and I hope someday you’ll forgive me,” Neil said.

Aprel says that after four years of suffering, this sentencing of 25 years to life with possibility of parole makes part of her healing.

“I have a lot of healing to do. Strength to move and try to live a normal life knowing that I have no dad,” Remkus said.
