Local veteran served in three wars turns 90

YUMA, Ariz. – A birthday celebration took place for a 90-year-old veteran in Yuma who served in three different wars.

Chuck Potter served in the Marine Corps, Army and Navy for a total of 36 years. He had dozens of military friends and family members who came out to celebrate his 90th birthday. He talks to us about his proudest moment as a Marine and how to stay youthful.

“I’m very honored to have this many people come to my birthday. Just be living to be 90 years old is all and I’m glad and happy to see them all,” Potter said.

Throughout his career, Potter says he loved joining the Marine Corps and everything they stand for.

“When I was in the Marines, I liked the respect that you received and I felt real proud. It made me strong,” Potter said.

He talks about the proudest moment of his career.

“When I seen my buddies raising the flag on the Uwajimaya. I watched them do it twice. One day they shot it down and one day we had a small flag and the next day they put up a big one and it stayed,” Potter said.

His daughter Sandra says she loved being in a military family.

“He’s the best man I’ve ever known in my life and I’m the daughter of a military man,” Sandra said.

Sandra says growing up her and her siblings were very well disciplined and shaped them out to be the people they’re today.

“We had strict rules but it never hurt none of us,” Sandra said.

When asked what his secret to longevity is he says to stay active and healthy.

“Keep your weight down. Don’t eat too many sweets and no sugar because it all turns to carbs and carbs makes you fat,” Potter said.

Potter says he plans to travel this summer.

He adds, “I’m going to drive to Alaska. I’m going to hook on my boat and I’m gonna go up to Alaska and go fishing up there again.”
