Local restaurant helps Relay for Life

El Centro, Calif. – When Relay For Life community manager Dan Salgado asked for a little help from the local Burgers and Beer restaurant in El Centro, he never imagined that all six restaurants would join the fight against cancer. Nor did he imagine a check for more than $5,100 dollars!

“Wow! Thank you so much. That was six different restaurants,
said Salgado.
Burgers and Beer owner, Jaime Honold, said the restaurants in Imperial Valley, Coachella, Temecula, and Yuma, Arizona, set aside part of the sales of one day for Relay For Life.

“The reason why is because we have plenty of employees or family members of the burgers and beer family that have gone through cancer,” said Honold.

Salgado says that volunteers at the different communities helped in getting customers to participate.

“We just pushed it and got everybody to come into the restaurant as best we could and it turned out it was a great success for burgers and beer and American Society,” Salgado said.
Honold says cancer has touched many of his employees in one way or another.
“And I see when they come to work and they’re sad because there’s something going on,” Honold explained.
Salgado says cancer is a threat that can touch anyone anywhere.
“Cancer never sleeps. Cancer takes all shapes, all forms, and it affects everybody, it affects newborns, teenagers, middle-aged, elderly, women, men. It doesn’t discriminate,” Salgado added.
He says finding a cure requires getting the help of everyone. Especially the business sector.
“It takes a village, a community, to raise the awareness, to raise the funds to have these successful events that are going to help us find that cure for cancer,” Salgado said.
For Salgado and Honold, the fight against cancer is a personal one.
“To me personally, my dad was taken from us because of cancer in 20014,” Salgado said.
“And we know this is a fight we need to win,” Honold concluded.
