Law enforcement agencies patrolling for DUIs

YUMA, Ariz. – The Fourth of July weekend is finally here and you know what that means, it’s time to have fun with your family and friends.

One Yuma resident said, “We’re just going to hang out with some friends. They usually have a BBQ at their house every year and then we might hit the civic center at night.”

But you want to make sure you stay safe if you’re drinking. Local law enforcement agencies will be out and about patrolling the streets looking for impaired drivers. This is the first time YPD will be partnering up with YCSO and Arizona Department of Public Safety on this DUI detail enforcement.

Edith Ruiz with YPD said, “We’re partnering up with Yuma County Sheriff’s Department and Department of Public Safety so we’ll have other officers patrolling the area.”

She said even though they seem to write up a few DUIs every year the numbers seem to be decreasing.

Ruiz adds, “It seems like it’s been less and less and it doesn’t seem like the numbers are going up higher. I think people are being smarter about going out or getting a designated driver.”

One bartender at Prison Hill Brewery said if you’re out and shouldn’t be behind a wheel they’ll call a driver to come get you.

Edith Weber said, “Now that we have Uber in Yuma we have a lot of cab companies. We’re always willing to call and set that up for you guys. Just have fun, drink lots of beer but never get behind the wheel.”
