Inmate stabbed to death during riot

CALIPATRIA, Calif. – An inmate was stabbed to death during a riot at Calipatria State Prison.

The 54-year-old inmate was stabbed by to other inmates during a fight involving 22 inmates. The incident happened in a prison yard Sunday about 10 a.m., according to prison officials.

The inmate was taken to the prison’s medial facility with stab wounds on his abdomen, chest, back and head. Officials say he was later taken to an outside hospital by ambulance where he died at 11 a.m.

Prison officials say the inmate who died was serving a life-with-the-possibility-of-parole sentence from Los Angeles County since 1989 for murder and robbery convictions. His name has not been released.

Officials say a second inmate was also stabbed on his back during the fight but is expected to make a full recovery.

Investigators are working to identify the suspects behind the attack.

Four inmate-made weapons were recovered during the riot.
