CALEXICO, Calif.- An 87 year old woman was walking to the bank to get money for her bus ticket home when a vehicle struck her and took off. The Calexico Police Department received a call reporting the incident at about 6:40 Sunday morning. When officers arrived at the scene the elderly woman was on the ground unconscious. Police officer Albert Llanas says, witnesses were unable to provide information that could determine the suspects identity, but did give him a very basic description of the car.
“We’re talking to several witnesses who stated it was a small four door vehicle and we’re trying to gather more information regarding this vehicle.” Said Llanas.
Llanas walked us through the details of how the hit and run went down, in the busy streets of downtown Calexico. Officer Llanas says he went to the stores near the scene to request video surveillance to help with the investigation, but the businesses were unable to provide footage. Bank of America has at least five exterior cameras, Llanas says he is waiting for a response from them.
“Through the legal department it takes a couple of days, I’ve been getting responses and they’ve been assisting me in this investigation.”
The 87 year old woman, Paula Navarro is in critical condition at the Desert Regional Medical Center. Her daughter Irma McDade says her mother is on a respiratory system.
“We talk to her, the first day or two there were times she would understand and nod her head and she would open her eyes but now, we don’t even have that.”Said McDade.
Officials are still investigating the accident and they ask if anyone knows anything to contact the Calexico Police Department with information.
