House rejects statewide ban on photo radar

PHOENIX (AP) – The state House has rejected a measure that would ban photo radar statewide.

Rep. Kelly Townsend of Mesa sponsored the measure that would prohibit state and local authorities from using red light and speed cameras.

A similar proposal failed Monday that would have required cities and towns to get voter approval for photo radar or red light enforcement.

Republicans annually push to end photo radar in the state. Former Sen. Kelli Ward, R-Lake Havasu City, introduced similar legislation last session, but her measure failed to pass in the Senate.

The House failed to pass House Bill 2540 on a 27-25 vote Thursday. The bill could still come back under rules that allow for a second vote.
