Five people hospitalized after Somerton crash

Somerton, Ariz. – Five people were injured in a three-vehicle crash that happened Wednesday on County 19th St. and Avenue H. The Somerton Cocopah Fire Department said firefighters responded to the crash at 3:33 p.m.

Officials said two small-sized sedans and one mid-sized sports utility vehicle were involved.  There was a total of eight occupants in the three vehicles and firefighters said five of them were taken to the hospital. Officials said it is unknown at this time how the accident occurred, but they believe the force of the collision sent one of the three vehicles off the roadway and into an agricultural field.

Firefighters said two males inside the grey sedan were not wearing seat belts when their vehicle were struck from both the rear and front.  Officials said both of these occupants suffered head injuries when they were thrown into the windshield as a result of not having their seat belts fastened.  Both of these patients were taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center.

The other small, tan in color sedan, had two females and two male occupants.  Officials said one of the male occupants suffered an arm injury and was also taken to YRMC.  The mid-sized, blue in color, SUV sustained front end damage.  This vehicle had one female and one male occupant.  Both occupants of this vehicle were complaining of chest pain and were also taken to YRMC.

All five patients were placed in full cervical spine immobilization as a precaution, due to the speed and damage that was apparent to the vehicles.  Somerton Cocopah Fire Department responded with two ambulances, one engine, one squad and two command vehicles.  San Luis Fire Department also responded with an engine, one ambulance and two command personnel.  MCAS Fire Department provided coverage at the Somerton Cocopah Fire Station for the duration of this accident.
