Expect delays on I-8 due to construction project

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. – Expect delays if you are driving West on Interstate 8 towards Imperial County on Wednesday. Caltrans says motorists traveling westbound Interstate 8 will be shifted to Evan Hewes Highway on Wednesday as pavement construction continues on the I-8 Update Project.

The traffic shift will be on I-8 just west of Gordon Wells and continue until just past State Route 98. Pavement improvements have been made on Evan Hewes Highway in preparation for its use as a detour route. According to Caltrans, there will be no direct access to the Brock Research Center exit. Signs are posted to alert motorists of the detour.

Caltrans is urging drivers to plan ahead for any potential delays due to the construction.

The I-8 Update is a multi-year project that will construct 48 miles of Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement and replace asphalt shoulders. The project is set to be done in five segments. Caltrans says it will provide a smoother ride and significantly extend the life expectancy of the roadway. Completion of the project is expected in 2019, according to Caltrans.
