ECPD SWAT deployed for search warrant

EL CENTRO, Calif. – An intense situation unfolded at a motel in El Centro as SWAT officers served a search warrant.

The SWAT team had to be part of the raid because police were looking for stolen guns. It took place at Premiere Inn around 7 p.m. on Thursday. This all started when property was stolen from someone’s home. The home burglarized is near Lotus and Orange Avenue that same Thursday, according to police. Several items were stolen from the home including two long rifles and a pellet gun.

After a follow up investigation, officials figured out the stolen property was at motel room on Adams Avenue. The El Centro Police Department (ECPD) SWAT team was called out to the motel and a witnesses described what they saw.

“Police came and they raided room 121, 119 and 111. And they had the armored truck. It was an armored truck, it was big, green with a bunch of lights,” said David Bailey, a resident of El Centro.

An ECPD K-9 helped with the raid by clearing the room before SWAT went in. Detectives say they found the stolen guns and arrested Mario Sandoval, 30, of El Centro and Jose Tamayo, 35, of Calipatria for possession of stolen property and being felons in possession of a firearm.

No officers or civilians were hurt during this operation and the burglary of the residence is still under investigation. Authorities want to remind residents to be diligent about protecting their homes, remember to lock doors and ask family or friends to check on your homes while on vacation.
