Calexico man risks life doing his job

CALEXICO, Calif. -A man speaks out after he was attacked in Calexico by two men at his work place.

Livan Escobar Valdez watches over cars and truck parked inside a gate on Pierce Avenue in Calexico, but this past weekend he said he did more than that. “I risked my life for my job,” Valdez said.

Valdez said he was walking back from a nearby store when he saw two men doing something he thought was suspicious to a car parked in front of his trailer. “I came and they were doing something to the car. It looked like they were taking the gasoline,” Valdez said.

That’s when things took a turn for the worse. “I walked towards them and they attacked me and there was nobody around,” Valdez said.

Valdez said he defended himself as best he could. “They tried to hurt me but couldn’t do much. I was opening the gate and they ran away,” Valdez said. He said he didn’t get that good of a view of his attackers before they fled and left him bleeding.

Calexico Police said Valdez received stab wounds to his arms and hands. “They began to attack him. And they probably stabbed him and he had to be transported to the hospital,” Officer Cynthia Fraker said.

Valdez showed us one of the stab wounds to his arms, but he said he’s not sorry he did his job. He said he will continue to work hard in order to prosper, at whatever cost. “I want to prosper a little more. One can never stay down, one must think about going up in life,” Valdez said.
