YUMA, Ariz. – The Gila Ridge boys basketball team knows how heartbreak feels. When they squared off against Lake Havasu in the Section 7 semifinal game, they lost by a slim margin with only seconds remaining on the clock. This time, they got their chance at redemption.
Through timely scoring and solid defense, the Hawks would shake the monkey off their back with a low scoring 36 to 26 win. From Devin Bush’s quick bucket off the opening tip, the Hawks would establish the game tempo that would never change. A.J. Mayes would also cash in on his scoring opportunities, taking in five of his ten overall games points in the early goings.
The Gila Ridge defensive scheme was also impressive to the degree that they would shut out the Knight’s offense in the final 14 minutes of the entire game. The Hawks are hoping they can make a similar defensive repeat performance on Saturday, as they return to the Palace to take on crosstown rival Cibola for the section title game. The Hawks have lost all their meetings to the Raiders this year by six points or less.
