Bit by the upset bug!

EL CENTRO, Calif. – When the CIF San Diego Section prep baseball playoffs started on Tuesday, the Imperial Valley had six team representing. Fast forward just 24 hours, that number dwindled to two teams.

One of them was the Central Spartans, who started off in the best position as the top seed in the Division Four tournament. Their 18-8 overall record and having a share of the Imperial Valley League title validated that cause.

When they hosted ninth seeded Mission Vista on Wednesday afternoon, they experienced some serious offensive woes. The Spartans Alex Quiroz earned a walk with two outs in the first inning. After a wild pitch, he would get into scoring position with an easy steal of second base. But, Mission Vista caught him being too aggressive not long after that, getting him out in a rundown play.

The Spartans from there didn’t get much going, getting shut out in a 2-0 loss.

Central will host an elimination game at Hal Church Field this Friday afternoon.
