EL CENTRO, Calif. – The Imperial County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) has filed animal cruelty charges against the mayor of El Centro.
Friday, detectives concluded an investigation and filed charges with the District Attorney’s office for cruelty to an animal against Jason Jackson.
Detectives say they began investigating Jackson back in February after an anonymous party reported an emaciated horse on Jackson’s property. However, Jackson assured the horse’s weak appearance was due to health issues.
When Jackson spoke to reporters in March about the case he said he had a veterinarian do blood work to prove the horse’s condition was the reason it appeared to be starving.
“I am an animal person so it is a little disturbing when people start jumping into conclusions. Everyone agreed that he’s certainly very thin and he dropped a lot of weight but there are no signs of abuse or neglect,” said Jackson during an interview with a reporter.
According to a press release issued by the ICSO, the horse’s health and condition has improved significantly with the help of the Imperial County Animal Control.
