3-alarm fire burning at recycling center in Phoenix

PHOENIX (AP) – Authorities say a wind-driven fire burning at a recycling center in Phoenix is now a three-alarm blaze.

Phoenix Fire Department crews have closed off streets surrounding the Arizona Pacific Pulp and Paper company and are in a defensive mode at this time due to 20-30 mph winds fanning the large flames.

It appears large stacks of cardboard and other paper products are burning outside the facility and spewing large plumes of thick, black smoke into the air over downtown Phoenix.

The fire broke out before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and authorities say its cause isn’t immediately known.

The recycling center is at 36th Street and University and is south of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

There are no immediate reports of any injuries and no reports of any flight delays.
